We'd like to extend huge congratulations to members of our Decommissioning and Dismantling team, headed up on this project by one of our D&D Engineers, Izzy Cunningham, who contributed to Sellafield Ltd's Remediation Characterisation and Remediated Accelerated Decommissioning teams’s success in this year’s Sellafield Wave Awards. The Wave Awards are an internal awards scheme that is run every year by Sellafield Ltd with the aim of celebrating successes amongst its employees, teams and partners.
Working in close collaboration with our client, we were part of a submission for the ‘Remediating site towards agreed end states’ category, which focused on ‘Revoluntionising Asbestos Waste Classification’. Our engineers supported Sellafield teams in challenging and rethinking default hazardous classifications given to wastes containing trace levels of asbestos. This is something that has a significant effect on choices made about demolition techniques, disposal routes, packaging requirements, environmental impacts, disposal costs and project timescales.
The submission focused on facilities that will benefit significantly from this approach, in this case alone promising approximately £4M of cost savings when it comes to disposal approaches and potentially a further £1M gained by enabling metal recycling. When applying this new approach site-wide the savings will be even greater.
We’re delighted to have played our part in this forward-thinking project and to have had the opportunity to work so closely with our client’s teams on something that will help make significant savings in time and money, while adhering to the highest possible standards of safety.
Well done to everyone whose work was recognised in the Wave Awards this year!
